Born in Accra Ghana, AKWASÏ's love for everything creative started with an ingrained inclination to music right from his musician mother's womb. Fortunately for him, the pressures of pursuing a more stable career was far from him as he went deeper into the arts in Achimota High School. There he served as Entertainment prefect and Editor of the school magazine amongst other things. It was not until he left Achimota school at age 17 that he decided to pursue the ultimate field of art which is Film after being moved to tears in the cinema.

AKWASÏ then started making award-winning short films at age 19, whilst doing his BFA degree in Film and TV Directing at the National Film and Television Institute, Ghana. His premiere short film on HIV/AIDS, ‘A Walk through Life’, was considered as 'the most inspiring and original film’ by RedHot+ contest jury in New York.

Afterwards, he continued to lend his voice and talent to social issues and themes with an impact on society - from domestic violence to racism, mental health, women empowerment and youth empowerment.

Whilst doing film school in Ghana, AKWASÏ's passion projects strode the many genres of film, from documentary to fiction.

For him it was and still is the impact that matters and this dictates which form and style the film takes - most of his fiction shorts however, have been psychological dramas with poetic structures that have moved many to tears and a sense of awe and appreciation for the human condition.

Through his work, Joseph quickly gained the admiration of industry giants but was eager to further his studies and explore the western world so he left home for Europe in 2015.

By 2019, he had obtained a Masters degree in Visual Communication(film directing) at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany through a scholarship by the DAAD. During this time, he redefined himself as a filmmaker, his relation to the world and his place in it after having traveled extensively and having gone to many prestigious film festivals. Joseph's graduate film, 'Home' which was screened in Cannes by the Creative Minds Group bordered on mental health and was a self-reflective emotionally gripping psychological drama that was too close to home that Joseph the artist himself ended up going through the same mental health issue his film explored.

Coming out of that a truly healed individual, Joseph vowed to commit his life and work to exploring themes and ideas that uplift, inspire as well as cause seismic cultural shifts moving forward - above all he understood the importance of community and how crucial it is to build one with people who see the world as he does.

This led Joseph to finally make the move back to his homeland Ghana in 2020 after living in Germany for five years -

'Where you live, your direct environment affects how you think, it shapes the way you behave - and as a filmmaker it influences the kind of stories you end up telling'.

He strongly believes he is well positioned now as a pan-African filmmaker, inspired by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's vision for Africa, and based in Ghana to tell the relevant stories that will move his people forward.

AKWASÏ is currently the Reel director and co-founder of ReelMaker Studios and The ReelMakers brand. A brand focused on collaborative filmmaking by authentic visual storytellers with a passion and verve for creating social impact films no matter the genre. His studio has worked with UN agencies(UNICEF, UNFPA, UNDP) and NGOs like 350.org, Marie Stopes International, WILDAF, GIZ, the EU and Enpact. Worked with brands like Guinness Ghana, DIAGEO, De Heus, The Macallan and Bloomberg.

"My calling is to reawaken ideas, ideals, and new ways of thinking through impact filmmaking."
